Cat. #0032222112: CHARLES SELLON

Extremely rare inscribed fountain pen signature on a 4x6-inch pale green autograph album page, personally signed and inscribed with uncharacteristically warm sentiments for child star Jane Withers in 1934, just after the filming of the Shirley Temple classic Bright Eyes.  Sellon played the wheelchair-bound, surreptitiously softhearted Uncle Ned in the movie, and he adds his character name here.  In good condition for its age, with some gentle surface creases and negligible soiling in spots.  The quintessential crotchedy carmudgeon of the stage and screen was unforgettably ill-tempered in silent comedy shorts and early talkie comedies, including It's a Gift (1934), in which he played the blind Mr. Muckle, opposite W.C. Fields.  Among his many wonderful credits, such as Tom Sawyer (1930), the western The Painted Desert (1931), The Cat's-Paw (1934) with Harold Lloyd, The Gay Deception (1935), and In Old Kentucky (1935), he made a number of contributions to the horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery genres.  These included a starring role as the Constable in the Lon Chaney, Sr. gem The Monster (1925), Whispering Wires (1926), Easy Pickings (1927), Bulldog Drummond (1928), As the Devil Commands (1933), Private Scandal (1934), and the Philo Vance flick The Casino Murder Case (1935), in which he played the dour police coroner.  This is only the second autograph of the actor we've ever encountered.
